The CW has canceled Emily Owens, M.D., the new medical drama starring Mamie Gummer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The previously scheduled mid-series finale will air on December 4, and the show will then return to air its final six episodes in January 2013.
Gummer stars as the title character Emily Owens, a newbie doctor who is glad to leave her nerdy past behind for a fresh start in the adult professional world. However she soon discovers that, sadly and comically, life at the hospital is no different than high school. Emily learns her high school nemesis is also just starting out at Denver Memorial, and it seems like they’ll be rivals all over again. The cast of Emily Owens, M.D. also features Kelly McCreary as Tyra, Michael Rady as Micah, Justin Hartley as Will, Necar Zadegan as Gina and Aja Naomi King as Cassandra.
Gummer has appeared on Broadway in Les Liasons Dangereuses and off-Broadway in The School of Lies, Hunting and Gathering, Uncle Vanya, The Water's Edge and Mr. Marmalade. Her film and TV credits include Off the Map, The Good Wife, Evening and Twelve Thirty.
