Broadway’s Kinky Boots will strut into town earlier than expected. The new musical, featuring music and lyrics by Grammy winner Cyndi Lauper and a book by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, will begin performances at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre on March 3, rather than the previously announced date of March 5. The opening night remains scheduled for April 4.
Based on the 2005 film and inspired by a true story, Kinky Boots follows Charlie Price (Stark Sands), an aspiring young businessman forced to give up his dreams of living in London in order to save his late father's shoe factory in Northern England. Charlie finds inspiration in Lola (Billy Porter), a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As the unlikely pair works to turn the factory around, they find they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible.
Kinky Boots is directed and choreographed by Tony winner Jerry Mitchell and stars Sands, Porter and Annaleigh Ashford. The production enjoyed its pre-Broadway world premiere this October at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre.
