Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Tony nominees Vanessa Williams and Condola Rashad will join previously announced star Cicely Tyson in the upcoming Broadway revival of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful. Michael Wilson will direct the production, which begins a 14-week engagement at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 31, 2013. Opening night is scheduled for April 23. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
First performed on Broadway in 1953, The Trip to Bountiful tells the story of Carrie Watts (Tyson), an elderly woman who dreams of returning to her small hometown of Bountiful, Texas one last time, against the wishes of her overprotective son (Gooding) and domineering daughter-in-law (Williams). The new mounting will mark the first major revival for the play since its original production, which won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play (Jo Van Fleet).
Gooding Jr. will be making his professional stage debut in The Trip to Bountiful. He earned an Oscar for Jerry Maguire. His other film credits include Boyz in the Hood, Men of Honor, As Good as It Gets, What Dreams May Come, A Few Good Men, Pearl Harbor, Radio, Murder of Crows, American Gangster, Shadowboxer and Red Tails.
Williams received her Tony nomination for playing the Witch in Into the Woods. Her other Broadway credits include Kiss of the Spider-Woman and Sondheim on Sondheim. She is well-known for her three-time Emmy nominated performance as Wilhemina Slater on TV's Ugly Betty, as well as her roles as Renee Perry on Desperate Housewives and Olivia Duran on 666 Park Avenue. Her film credits include Soul Food, Eraser, Dance With Me, Shaft and Hannah Montana: The Movie. As a recording artist, her many hits include “Save the Best For Last,” “You Can’t Run,” “The Right Stuff,” “Dreamin’,” “Runnin’ Back to You” and “Colors of the Wind.”
Rashad received a Tony nomination for her performance in Stick Fly. Her other theater credits include Ruined, Tambourines To Glory and Pearl. Rashad’s film and TV credits include 30 Beats, Sex and the City 2, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Smash, Georgetown and The Good Wife. Most recently she starred in Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias remake.
