Encores! production of the musical revue Cotton Club Parade will arrive on Broadway this fall. Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle and conceived by Jack Viertel, the musical had two acclaimed runs at New York City Center in 2011 and 2012 (featuring Glee star Amber Riley). No casting, theater or exact dates have been announced for the Broadway production.
Cotton Club Parade is a celebration of Duke Ellington’s years at the famed Harlem nightclub in the 1920s, when the joint was jumping with revues featuring big band, swing and blues. As in the original shows, Cotton Club Parade will feature singers, dancers and variety acts, with songs by the greatest jazz composers of the time including Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields (“I Can’t Give You Anything But Love”), Harold Arlen (“Stormy Weather”), and of course, Duke Ellington (“Rockin’ in Rhythm).
In addition to Riley, the cast for the 2012 engagement featured Tony winner Adriane Lenox, Tony nominee Joshua Henry and Jared Grimes as well as Alexandria Bradley, Andrew Carter, Kyra Da Costa, Carmen Ruby Floyd, La Tanya Hall, Jeremiah Haynes, Christopher Jackson, Monroe Kent III, Karine Plantadit, T. Oliver Reid, Britton Smith, Tanya Birl, Christopher Broughton, Wilkie Ferguson, Chanon Judson, Marielys Molina, Erin Moore, Jason Samuels Smith, Monique Smith, Daniel J. Watts and J.L. Williams.
