Tuesday night marked the return of Smash, and Broadway.com asked readers to pick the most surprising moment from the season two opener. At the top of the list came Megan Hilty’s jaw-dropping 11 o’clock number “They Just Keep Moving The Line,” performed at the American Theatre Wing gala. While Ivy saved the day for the fictional musical Bombshell, Hilty equally came to the rescue of Smash, finishing off the killer two-hour premiere with a gorgeous number reminiscent of season one’s signature tune “Let Me Be Your Star.” Well, Ivy, the fans have spoken: you already are their star!
Of course, Hilty’s show-saving performance just barely eked out Jeremy Jordan’s introductory number “Broadway, Here I Come” for the top spot. Rounding out the top three was Harvey Fierstein’s unexpected cameo as… Harvey Fierstein. We can’t imagine anyone playing that part better.
