Second Stage Theatre’s annual Uptown Series will present the world premiere of The Tutors, a new play by Erica Lipez, and the New York premiere of the crime musical Murder For Two. Directed by Thomas Kail (In the Heights), The Tutors will play from May 22 through June 16, with opening night set for June 5. Murder For Two, which features music by Joe Kinosian, lyrics by Kellen Blair and a book by Kinosian and Blair, will play July 10 through August 10. Opening night is scheduled for July 25. Both productions will play at off-Broadway’s McGinn/Cazale Theater.
Set in New York City, The Tutors tells the story of Joe and Toby, two high school tutors. Meanwhile, Heidi anonymously helps write college admissions essays online. Together, the trio start a friendship-finding website from their apartment—but their work with students begins to invade their lives, and in Heidi’s case, her subconscious. Casting will be announced shortly.
Murder For Two is a unique take on the murder mystery, in which one actor plays the detective, and one actor plays every suspect. They also both play the piano! The musical tells the story of American novelist Arthur Whitney, who has been shot at his surprise birthday party. Officer Marcus, who longs to shed his shoddy reputation and finally become a detective, is thrown into a zany drawing room where the list of suspects reads like a who’s who of crazy. Casting and a director have not yet been announced.
