You bet your ass it's ritzy! The new musical adaptation of Beaches will have its world premiere at the Signature Theatre in Washington, D.C. next year. Based on Iris Rainer Dart's novel, which also spawned the 1988 movie of the same name, Beaches will play February 18, 2014 through March 23. No casting has been announced at this time.
Directed by Eric Schaeffer, Beaches follows two friends through 30 years of childhood, love and tragedy. Bubbly, eccentric Cee Cee and beautiful, privileged Bertie meet as children and become fast friends. From pen pals to roommates to romantic rivals, Cee Cee and Bertie's oil-and-water friendship persists through even the most tragic trials. Beaches features a book and lyrics by Rainer Dart and Thom Thomas and music by David Austin.
The film adaptation of Beaches was directed by Garry Marshall, and starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. The film's theme song, "Wind Beneath My Wings," won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Yes Bette, by now we know we're your hero, but the song still delivers after all these years. Check out Midler croon "Wind Beneath My Wings" below!
