Let the Battles begin! Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a new musical inspired by the album from Grammy-winning band The Flaming Lips, could be heading to Broadway, according to The Los Angeles Times. The rock tuner originally premiered at California’s La Jolla Playhouse in November 2012, and Korean producer Chun-soo Shin (Broadway’s Jekyll & Hyde) plans to transfer the production to Broadway and Asia in 2014. No official dates, casting or theater have been set.
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots tells the story of Yoshimi, a young Japanese artist facing the battle of her life: the battle for her life. Adrift from her family and lover, Yoshimi travels alone into a fantastical robot world where she wages a war with fate. Is her will to survive powerful enough to master the evil forces that threaten to destroy her?
Directed by Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar), the La Jolla production starred Kimiko Glenn as Yoshimi, Nik Walker as Booker, Paul Nolan as Ben and Tom Hewitt as Doctor Petersen. The production featured glowing LED costumes, projections and a 14-foot robot puppet.
