Oscar and Tony winner Mercedes Ruehl is set to join Broadway vet Carla Cugino in ABC’s new legal drama Doubt, according to Deadline.com. The pilot, created by House’s David Shore, will co-star Steve Coogan as Gugino’s ex-husband.
Doubt follows Vincent (Coogan) a cop-turned-low-level-lawyer who crusades for his clients while battling his inner demons and working to win back his ex-wife Linda (Gugino), a straight-shooting ADA. Ruehl will play Syn Newman, a lawyer who works with her husband (John Pankow) in offices they rent from Vincent.
Ruehl won a Tony for her role in Lost in Yonkers, and she received nominations for The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? and The Shadow Box. Her other Broadway credits include The American Plan, The Rose Tattoo and I'm Not Rappaport. Ruehl won an Oscar for her role in Terry Gilliam's The Fisher King.
