Tony-winning director and producer Harold Prince will be honored at the American Theatre Wing's annual gala on September 16 at The Plaza Hotel. The Wing also announced that Anki Leeds and CeCe Black will serve as the gala's honorary co-chairs. Proceeds from the event benefit the Wing's continuing support of theatrical education and excellence.
"Harold Prince is not only a beloved and accomplished icon, but also a visionary who has consistently pushed the art form forward," Wing Executive Director Heather Hitchens said in a statement. "It’s hard to think of another artist who has made the kind of impact he has to the American Theatre, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to honor him in this way."
Prince has won 21 Tony Awards (more than any other individual) and received the National Medal of Arts in 2000 for a career spanning more than 40 years. He produced Broadway productions of The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello! and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Prince directed the premiere productions of She Loves Me, Cabaret, Company, Follies, Candide, Pacific Overtures, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Parade and Bounce. His film credits include movie adaptations of The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees and A Little Night Music.
