Manhattan Theatre Club's new off-Broadway comedy The Explorers Club, starring Tony nominees John McMartin and Jennifer Westfeldt, begins preview performances on May 28 at New York City Center—Stage I. The show will play a limited-engagement through July 21. Opening night is scheduled for June 20.
Penned by Nell Benjamin and directed by Marc Bruni, The Explorers Club is set in London in the late 1870s and tells the story of the prestigious Explorers Club in the midst of a dual crisis. Their acting coach wants to admit a female and their bartender is terrible. Despite the fact that said woman is brilliant, letting her in could change the British Empire forever, and how could such a decision be made without a decent drink?
In addition to McMartin and Westfeldt, The Explorers Club features Brian Avers, Max Baker, Steven Boyer, Arnie Burton, Carson Elrod, David Furr and Lorenzo Pisoni. The production includes scenic design by Donyale Werle, costume design by Anita Yavich, lighting design by Philip S. Rosenberg, sound design by Darron L West and original music by Laurence O'Keefe.
