The name on everybody's lips is gonna be...Ashlee! Pop star and Broadway alum Ashlee Simpson will play Roxie Hart in Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl. Directed by Brooke Shields (a former Roxie Hart herself), the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical will also feature previously announced stars Samantha Barks as Velma Kelly, Stephen Moyer as Billy Flynn, Lucy Lawless as Matron “Mama” Morton and Drew Carey as Amos Hart. Chicago runs July 26 through 28 only.
Simpson made her stage debut as Roxie in the West End production of Chicago in 2006. She participated in the special one-night only 10th anniversary performance of Chicago in 2006 at the Ambassador Theatre, and made her Broadway debut in the show in 2009. As a recording artist, Simpson's first three albums (Autobiography, I Am Me and Bittersweet World) have sold over nine million copies worldwide. She had her own MTV series The Ashlee Simpson Show, and she starred on the CW's reboot of Melrose Place.
Set in the 1920s, Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover. Desperate to avoid conviction, she hires Billy Flynn (Moyer), Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer, much to the dismay of her rival cellmate Velma Kelly (Barks).
Chicago holds the record as the longest-running Broadway revival. Directed by Walter Bobbie, the Tony-winning revival is now in its 16th year and the Broadway production stars Amy Spanger, Amra-Faye Wright, Alexander Gemignani, Paul C. Vogt and Wendy Williams.
