A small island in Maine will host the world premiere of Red Eye of Love, a brand new musical comedy starring Broadway's Betsy Wolfe, Andrew Samonsky and John Treacy Egan. The show, which features music by Sam Davis and book/lyrics by Arnold Weinstein and John Wulp, will run from August 1 through August 4 at Waterman’s Community Center in North Haven.
Red Eye of Love is described as “a rollicking musical” about a love triangle between a young idealist (Samonsky), a materialistic butcher (Egan) and the girl they both love (Wolfe). The musical is set against the backdrop of the Great Depression.
The musical was first produced as a play at The Living Theatre in 1961; Wulp and Weinstein began to adapt it into a musical in the ‘80s, completing the book and lyrics before Weinstein’s death in 2006. Though Wulp has now retired, his community of North Haven in Maine decided to honor him by producing Red Eye of Love.
Wolfe recently starred on Broadway in The Mystery of Edwin Drood and the off-Broadway revival of The Last Five Years; she’ll appear in Bullets Over Broadway in April 2014. Samonsky also starred in Drood, as well as the Broadway productions of Scandalous and South Pacific. Egan recently closed Nice Work If You Can Get It; his other credits include Sister Act, Bye Bye Birdie and The Little Mermaid.
