Choir Boy, a play with gospel music, will extend at Manhattan Theatre Club's New York City Center — Stage II through August 11. Directed by Trip Cullman, Choir Boy was originally scheduled to run through July 21 at the off-Broadway theater. The Tarell Alvin McCraney-penned play opened on July 2.
Set at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, Choir Boy tells the story of Pharus (Jeremy Pope), who wants nothing more than to take his rightful place as leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. The drama also features Tony winner Chuck Cooper, Austin Pendleton, Nicholas L. Ashe, Kyle Beltran, Grantham Coleman and Wallace Smith.
The Choir Boy creative team includes scenic and costume designer David Zinn, lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski, sound designer Fitz Patton and musical director Jason Michael Webb.
