James Snyder has been tapped to join the forthcoming Broadway musical If/Then, which stars the previously announced Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp and LaChanze. The musical, from Tony-winning songwriting team Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey and director Michael Greif, will premiere on Broadway in March 2014 following an engagement in Washington, D.C. this fall.
Snyder will play Josh, a doctor and army reservist who meets Elizabeth (Menzel) on her first day back in New York City. The show tells the story of Elizabeth’s return to Manhattan, the ultimate city of possibility, as she finds herself on the verge of turning 40 and intent on finding a fresh start in life. Rapp plays an old college friend of Elizabeth’s; Tony winner LaChanze plays Kate, Elizabeth’s new neighbor.
Set against the ever-shifting landscape of modern day Manhattan, If/Then is described as a "romantic, original new musical about how choice and chance collide and how we learn to love the fallout." Additional casting for the show will be announced shortly.
Snyder starred in the 2008 Broadway production of Cry-Baby. His other theater credits include the Goodspeed Opera House’s acclaimed production of Carousel, Johnny Baseball at Williamstown, Fanny at New York City Center, Broadway: Three Generations at the Kennedy Center and Rock of Ages in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He will appear on film in the upcoming indie feature Meth Head.
If/Then will play Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre from November 5 through December 8. The show will begin Broadway previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on March 4, 2014, with opening night set for March 27.
