Penn Badgley and Milla Jovovich are the latest actors to board director Michael Almereyda’s contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, starring previously announced headliners Ethan Hawke and Ed Harris. Almereyda previously helmed an adaptation of Hamlet, also starring Hawke, in 2000.
Deadline reports that the former Gossip Girl stud will play the orphan Posthumus, who surreptitiously weds Imogen, the daughter of King Cymbeline, and is thusly exiled. Jovovich will play the Queen, Cymbeline's wife. Hawke (who is tackling another Shakespeare classic when he plays Macbeth at Lincoln Center Theater this October) plays Iachimo, a friend who bets Posthumus that he can’t successfully seduce Imogen; Harris will play the titular monarch.
Badgley’s recent screen credits include his starring role as Dan Humphrey on the now-concluded teen series Gossip Girl, as well as films Easy A, Greetings from Tim Buckley, Margin Call, The Stepfather, John Tucker Must Die and the upcoming Parts Per Billion. Jovovich is best known for her roles in the Resident Evil film franchise, as well as the cult sci-fi classic The Fifth Element.
