All hail the nine-year-old king! Timmy the Great, a whimsical musical comedy written by Pulitzer Prize nominee Sandra Hochman, will debut off-Broadway at the Theater for the New City on August 15. Opening night set for August 18 and the mad-cap tuner will run through September 1. Based on the popular children's book King Timmy the Great, the musical is directed by Broadway casting director Jay Binder (Nice Work If You Can Get It, Gypsy) and choreographer Julie Arenal (Hair).
Timmy the Great features more than 21 songs co-written by Hochman, Stevie Craig and composer Gary Kupper (Freckleface Strawberry) and is an all-ages fable about a nine-year-old king. Following the death of King Edward the Sensible, Timmy inherits the throne of the Kingdom of Hearts. The children of the kingdom want to be treated as adults, so they stage a revolution and occupy the palace lawn to demand change. King Timmy, with his childlike wisdom, devises unconventional solutions to thwart the devious kings.
