Fans of the cult TV comedy Community know that Yvette Nicole Brown—who plays fan favorite bible-thumper Shirley—has some serious pipes on her. Brown was on the Broadway scene at opening night for First Date supporting her friend (and one-time Chuck scene partner) Zachary Levi, so we took the opportunity to check in with the rising star about whether we’d ever get to hear her velvety vocals on Broadway.
“I don’t feel worthy of Broadway yet!” Brown told Broadway.com. “I really respect everyone that does this eight shows a week, but I feel like I need to work a little longer, be in the industry a little longer before I would feel worthy to be on that stage.”
Respectable, yes, but we think she’s plenty worthy! Of course, we had to ask which roles Brown would want to take on—once she deemed herself duly fit for the Great White Way, of course.
“I love Miss Hannigan in Annie, I really do,” she gushed. “And Jane Lynch from Hollywood Game Night [which Brown appeared on] just did it, and she was brilliant. That’s been a dream role my whole life. Even when I was a kid, I never dreamed about being one of the orphans. I saw Carol Burnett in the movie, and now every time there’s a revival, I want to be Miss Hannigan! I would just love that.”
