The Broadway musical adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County will begin preview performances on January 13, 2014, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre! Featuring an original score by Tony winner Jason Robert Brown, the previously announced musical includes a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman. Directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sherr, the musical is scheduled to open February 27.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Robert James Waller, The Bridges of Madison County will star four-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara and stage and screen star Steven Pasquale. The musical drama tells the story of an Iowa housewife named Francesca Johnson (O'Hara) and her unlikely love affair with Robert Kincaid (Pasquale), a National Geographic photographer. The novel was adapted into a 1995 film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, who also helmed the movie.
The Bridges of Madison County premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts on August 1, starring Elena Shaddow and Pasquale. (O'Hara, who is expecting her second child in September, did not appear in the pre-Broadway production.)
The creative team for The Bridges of Madison County will include scenic design by Michael Yeargan, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Donald Holder and sound design by Jon Weston.
