All hail the new Queen of Scotland, Marion Cotillard. The La Vie en Rose Oscar winner will replace previously announced star Natalie Portman as Lady Macbeth in an upcoming film version of Macbeth, according to Deadline.com. Directed by Justin Kurzel, the big screen tragedy will star Michael Fassbender as the bloodthirsty king. Filming is set to begin in the UK in January 2014.
In addition to La Vie en Rose, Cotillard starred in the film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Nine, The Dark Night Rises, Big Fish, Inception, Contagion and Midnight in Paris.
The Shakespeare classic is receiving a big resurgence in popular culture. Last season, Alan Cumming starred in the Broadway.com Audience Choice Award-winning solo production; and next season Ethan Hawke will headline another Broadway mounting at Lincoln Center Theater, while Kenneth Branagh leads a production headed to the Park Avenue Armory. New York is also home to the long-running Macbeth-themed show Sleep No More.
