Oh, the horror…series! Fresh off the news of his upcoming departure from Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, original star Reeve Carney has scored a key role in Showtime’s upcoming horror drama series Penny Dreadful, created by Tony winner John Logan (Red, I’ll Eat You Last).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carney will be a series regular on the eight-episode drama, which intertwines classic horror character origin stories (like that of Dr. Frankenstein and Dracula) into one fright-packed anthology. Carney will play Dorian Gray, the titular hero of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel about a young man who sells his soul in order to stop aging. Penny Dreadful also stars Timothy Dalton, Jost Hartnett and Eva Green.
Carney is poised to exit his three-year stint as the superhero webslinger in Broadway’s Spider-Man in September. He’ll appear next in Mystery White Boy as musician Jeff Buckley. Carney also made a memorable appearance at MTV’s Video Music Awards in August 2013, attending the show with Taylor Swift (who picked up the best female video award for “I Knew You Were Trouble,” in which Carney starred).
