Three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will make her Broadway debut in the iconic role of Sally Bowles in Roundabout Theatre Company’s forthcoming 2014 Broadway revival of Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret, opposite previously announced star Alan Cumming as the Emcee, according to The New York Times.
The production will feature Sam Mendes reprising his direction of the 1998 Tony-winning production, along with Rob Marshall returning to choreograph and co-direct.
Based on a book by Christopher Isherwood, Cabaret tells the story of a seedy nightclub in 1930’s Berlin where a young English performer strikes up a relationship with an American writer, all while a zealous Master of Ceremonies commands the action at the Kit Kat Klub. The original Broadway production opened in 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre; the most recent Tony-winning revival in 1998 starred Cumming, Natasha Richardson and Ron Rifkin.
Since first winning over audiences as Jen Lindley on the hit TV show Dawson’s Creek, Williams has built an extensive film resume with roles in Brokeback Mountain (Oscar nomination), Synecdoche, New York, Blue Valentine (Oscar nomination), Shutter Island, I’m Not There., Take This Waltz, My Week with Marilyn (Oscar nomination), and Oz the Great and Powerful. On stage, Williams appeared off-Broadway in Smelling a Rat and Tracy Letts' Killer Joe and in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard opposite Jessica Chastain at Williamstown Theatre Festival.
Cumming earned his first Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing the Emcee in Cabaret; his other Broadway credits include Design For Living, The Threepenny Opera and his mostly one-man performance of Macbeth in 2013. His film and TV resume includes The Good Wife, X2, Spy Kids, Web Therapy, Burlesque, Spice World, Josie and the Pussycats, Annie and The Anniversary Party.
