Get out your old boom box and blast “Eye of the Tiger,” because Andy Karl is heading into the ring in the forthcoming Broadway musical Rocky! Karl will play “Italian Stallion” Rocky Balboa alongside Margo Seibert as his girlfriend Adrian. Directed by Alex Timbers, the new musical will begin performances February 11, 2014, with an official opening night on March 13 at the Winter Garden Theatre. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
Karl’s Broadway credits include The Mystery of Edwin Drood, 9 to 5, Legally Blonde, Jersey Boys, Wicked and Saturday Night Fever. His film and TV appearances include Joyful Noise, New York I Love You and the 2007 broadcast of Legally Blonde: The Musical. Seibert will make her Broadway debut in Rocky. Her regional credits include Arcadia, A Christmas Carol and the Weston Playhouse Theatre production of Next to Normal opposite Heidi Blickenstaff.
Rocky features a score by Tony-winning songwriting team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and a book by Tony winner Thomas Meehan and Sylvester Stallone, who was nominated for an Oscar for the 1976 film’s screenplay. Rocky tells the story of a struggling, small-time Philadelphia boxer who gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to go the distance against heavyweight champ Apollo Creed. The musical originally premiered in Hamburg, Germany, in 2012, starring Drew Sarich in the title role.
The Rocky creative team includes choreographer Kelly Devine and fight choreographer Steven Hoggett.
