It’s been 16 long years since stage and screen great Glenn Close took her final bow in Sunset Boulevard, and we're still dreaming about her legendary performance as faded and delusional film star Norma Desmond. At long last, could the three-time Tony winner be bringing her talents back to the New York stage? At the American Theatre Wing tribute to Hal Prince on September 16, Close hinted to Broadway.com about a new stage project.
“I might be coming back to Broadway, oh, in the not-too-distant future,” Close confided with a raise of her eyebrows. “I’m so excited by the possibility.” The star remained tight-lipped about any details, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a big musical featuring Close in a powerhouse leading role, preferably with a killer 11:00 number! (We’d also be happy with a stage redo of her nutty turn as the First Lady in Mars Attacks!)
After getting her start on Broadway, Close become a big Hollywood draw in films including Dangerous Liaisons, Air Force One and Fatal Attraction. Still, the six-time Oscar nominee admitted that the stage is where she feels the most at home. “To me, [it's] where where you really develop as an artist. I have a huge respect for film acting, but onstage, you don’t have editors and you don’t have sound people. You don’t have the close-up. You’re out there with your fellow actors and the audience. It’s a chemical mixture that’s happened for centuries! There’s nothing for me that really substitutes that.”
