What’s it like growing up in a funeral parlor? Unless you’ve read Alison Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic novel, you’ll find out when performances begin on September 30 for the new musical Fun Home at the Public Theater. After premiering through the Public Lab last year, the show is making its official debut with an opening night on October 22 in the Public’s Newman Theater.
Based on Bechdel’s novel, Fun Home charts a girl’s quest to come to terms with her father’s unexpected death. As she moves between past and present, Alison dives deep into the story of her volatile, brilliant father and relives her unique childhood at her family’s funeral home.
Sam Gold directs the new musical, which stars Michael Cerveris as Bruce, Judy Kuhn as Helen, Alexandra Socha as Medium Alison, Sydney Lucas as Small Alison, Beth Malone as Alison, Joel Perez as Roy, Griffin Birney as John, Noah Hinsdale as Christian and Roberta Colindrez as Joan.
The show features music by Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Shrek, Caroline, or Change) and lyrics/book by Lisa Kron (Well).
