The next big musical TV series you’ll be obsessing over has just been greenlit. ABC has given a pilot order to Galavant, a new musical comedy fairy tale from Alan Menken (Newsies, every Disney movie ever), Glenn Slater and Dan Fogelman.
Deadline reports that the trio—who teamed up for last season’s Emmy-nominated musical episode of The Neighbors—will reunite for Galavant, a single-camera comedy that follows a handsome prince who embarks on a quest for revenge on the king who stole his one true love. Fogelman penned the script, with composer Menken and lyricist Slater on board to write the score.
If you need any convincing as to why the musical fantasy is perfect for Menken, Slater and Fogelman, consider their other notable collaboration: Disney’s hit 2010 comedy Tangled, which featured a script co-written by Fogelman and music by Menken/Slater (and starred hunky Broadway newbie Zachary Levi). Plus, given ABC’s success with Once Upon a Time and the upcoming spin-off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, the network is the place to go for tales of the fairy variety.
You don't have to wait too long for new music from Menken, though—the Oscar, Grammy and Tony winner is working on Disney's next theatrical venture Aladdin, which arrives on Broadway this spring.
