Craig Bierko, who began performances September 17 as the evil Miss Trunchbull in Broadway's Matilda, has taken a leave of absence from the production following an "aggravated shoulder injury," according to a production spokesperson. Bierko, who was forced to delay his original start date due to the same injury, will be taking a "12-week disability leave" from the show. Understudies Chris Hoch and Ben Thompson will be playing Miss Trunchbull until Bierko is able to return.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary girl who dreams of a better life. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, Matilda dares to take a stand and change her destiny. Based on the beloved Roald Dahl novel of the same name, the musical features a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
The cast of Matilda also includes Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro in the title role, Jill Paice as Miss Honey, Lesli Margherita as Miss Wormwood, Tony winner Gabriel Ebert as Mr. Wormwood and Karen Aldridge as Mrs. Phelps. Matilda features choreography by Peter Darling, set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone and sound design by Simon Baker.
