They’re gonna baptize him! A.J. Holmes is set to join the second national tour of The Book of Mormon as Elder Cunningham. The member of StarKid Productions, the popular Chicago-based theater group, will join the cast on October 12 at Omaha’s Orpheum Theater, where the show will run through October 20.
As a member of Team StarKid, Holmes composed the score to the Internet sensation A Very Potter Musical, along with Glee star and Broadway alum Darren Criss. He is also the co-composer of StarKid’s Me and My Dick, A Very Potter Senior Year and Twisted. Holmes made his national tour debut in Young Frankenstein and appeared regionally in Next to Normal.
Holmes will join a cast that includes Nic Rouleau as Elder Price, Syesha Mercado as Nabulungi, Pierce Cassedy as Elder McKinley and James Vincent Meredith as Mafala Hatimbi.
Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows two young Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda, who soon discover their training did not quite prepare them for the world outside of Salt Lake City. The Broadway production opened in March 2011 and went on to win nine Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Director. The original Broadway cast recording took home a Grammy Award in 2012 for Best Musical Theater Album.
The musical is directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw, who also serves as choreographer. The Book of Mormon features set design by Scott Pask, costume design by Ann Roth, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt and sound design by Brian Ronan.
