And the gods heard our prayers! Kenita R. Miller (The Color Purple), Michael James Scott (Aladdin), Joe Aaron Reid (If/Then) and Andre Ward (Rock of Ages) will star in a one-night-only performance of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' Once on This Island on January 20, 2014 at the Lucille Lortel Theater. Directed by Curtis Holbrook, proceeds from the concert will go to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York and Western New York. Additional casting will be announced soon.
The concert performance will feature Miller as Ti Moune, Reid as Daniel, Scott as Agwe and Ward as Papa Ge. Once on This Island tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
Once on This Island, an adaptation of the popular Disney fairy tale The Little Mermaid, garnered eight 1991 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Book and Score. The West End production opened in 1994, where it won the 1995 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
