NBC is going back to the future with its next live Broadway musical broadcast. The network will revive the musical Peter Pan, which already caused a TV sensation back in 1955 when it reached 65 million viewers, more than three times the viewers The Sound of Music Live! enjoyed in December. Peter Pan Live! will broadcast on December 4, 2014.
A Broadway family classic, Peter Pan premiered on October 20, 1954 at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway, featuring a book by J.M. Barrie, music by Mark “Moose” Charlap and Jule Style, lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins and, like The Sound of Music, Mary Martin in the lead role of the boy who won’t grow up. NBC broadcast the musical live a total of three times previously, in 1955, 1956 and 1960. The musical revived five times on Broadway since, first with Sandy Duncan as Peter, but more often with former gymnast Cathy Rigby.
