Take That! British boy band legend Gary Barlow is teaming up with Calendar Girls playwright Tim Firth to adapt the work into a musical. Firth told the Daily Mail that the first workshop “will be in a church hall, and then we’ll see what will happen to it.”
Barlow and Firth have already written around 50-60 songs "for women of a certain age," revealed Firth, although only a quarter would be used. The new production will be very different to the play and will “need to be about the town, the women and the husbands.”
Calendar Girls was a 2003 movie centering on an enterprising group of women who eschew traditional fundraising ideas like bake sales and decide to raise money for charity their own R-rated way. Firth’s original stage adaption opened in the West End on April 4, 2009 at the Noel Coward Theatre. Six-time Ivor Novello winner Barlow is one of the U.K.’s most successful composers and as frontman of pop-group Take That has sold more than 50 million records worldwide.
