Now we’re all going to get the chance to see Oscar and Emmy winner Emma Thompson and Grammy winner Bryn Tervel in the New York Philharmonic's production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street! The show will be telecast nationally on Live From Lincoln Center, hosted by five-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, on PBS stations. The air date will be announced in due course.
With Thompson as Mrs. Lovett and Tervel as the titular demon barber, the show will play March 5 through March 8 at Avery Fisher Hall. With music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Wheeler, Sweeney Todd follows a wronged barber who takes to slitting throats while seeking revenge on the corrupt judge who destroyed his life and family.
The concert production will be conducted by Alan Gilbert and directed by Lonny Price, who also directed the Philharmonic’s 2000 staging of Sweeney Todd, starring Tony winners George Hearn and Patti LuPone.
