The 2014 Tony nominees have already proven their skills in acting, singing and, in the case of Bullets Over Broadway star Nick Cordero, tap dancing while shooting guns at the same time. But do they have what it takes to ace Broadway.com’s super-serious, ultra-important Tony Nominee Pop Quiz? We headed to the Meet the Nominees reception at the Paramount Hotel armed with a stack of pop quizzes to test the memory, deductive reasoning skills and artistic merit of this starry bunch. How did they measure up? Click here to find out!
After loading the completed quizzes into our handy Broadway Scantron machine, we’ve discovered a few interesting trends we thought you should know about. First, about a quarter of the nominees were in their PJs when the nominations were announced, while six were completely naked (or so they say). The rest were either sleeping (yeah right, guys) or doing random things like eating avocado toast, doing hot coffee spit takes, pumping breast milk and picking up poop in the Tompkins Square Park dog run.
What were some of the most memorable first words that came out of the 2014 nominees’ mouths after being nominated? They are, collectively: “Yay, f*ck, are you sure, good deal, blehahahahahah, holy f*cking shit, sweet, oh no not again, shut the f*ck up, phew, huh, mmm cool, Walker put your underwear on,” and “WTF.” Even Aladdin composer Alan Menken uttered “Holy sh*t!”
Who are the nominees’ favorite dudes named “Tony?" When given a choice between Tony Soprano, Tony Manero, Tony Shalhoub, Tony Bennett, Tony Danza and Tony the Tiger, the overwhelming favorite was fellow nominee Tony Shalhoub. (Except for Shalhoub himself, who selected Tony Soprano on his quiz.) Meanwhile, only two nominees chose Saturday Night Fever character Tony Manero as their favorite Tony: Rocky star Andy Karl, who starred in Saturday Night Fever on Broadway, and If/Then headliner Idina Menzel, who has, um, some history with John Travolta.
Three nominees scored an A+ on our quiz: Andy Karl, Of Mice and Men headliner Chris O’Dowd and Aladdin book writer Chad Beguelin. All three apparently spent their Tony nomination morning “completely naked” and “eating waffles,” which is, of course, always the correct answer to every pop quiz ever.
