Big name stars such as Denzel Washington, Daniel Craig and Neil Patrick Harris, along with popular titles including Aladdin and Les Miserables, helped Broadway do big business over the 2013–2014 season. Great White Way shows grossed $1.27 billion during the period and total attendances reached 12.21 million. All new and continuing productions ran a total of 1496 playing weeks.
This past season, which began May 27, 2013 and ended May 25, concluded with grosses up 11.4%, attendance up 5.6% and playing weeks up 4.6% on last year’s figures, which were impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
44 productions opened during the 2013-2014 season which included 16 musicals (12 new, four revivals), 25 plays (10 new, 14 revivals, one return engagement) and three specials.
