Curtain up, clothes off! The 2005 film Mrs Henderson Presents, which starred Dame Judi Dench and the late Bob Hoskins, will be adapted for the stage in a new musical eyeing the West End. The Daily Telegraph reports that Tony and Oscar winner Don Black (Sunset Boulevard) is on board the creative team.
Inspired by a true story, Mrs Henderson Presents tells the story of Laura Henderson, a recent widow in the years preceding World War II, who buys the shabby Windmill Theatre as a new hobby. When other theaters begin to copy their successful revue, Laura devises a new plan for the show—one with considerably less clothing.
The film, directed by Stephen Frears, was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2006, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Dench. The cast also included Christopher Guest and Kelly Reilly.
