What happens on Broadway...well, you know. As previously speculated, the musical comedy Honeymoon in Vegas will move into the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Based on the 1992 film of the same name, the tuner features a score by Tony winner Jason Robert Brown and a book by the film’s screenwriter Andrew Bergman. Tony Danza, Rob McClure and Brynn O’Malley, who all starred in the Paper Mill Playhouse production last year, will reprise their performances under the direction of Gary Griffin. The production will begin previews on November 18 with opening night set for January 15, 2015.
Best known for his roles on screen in Who’s the Boss? and Taxi, Danza has appeared on Broadway in The Producers, A View From the Bridge and The Iceman Cometh. His film credits include Crash, Angels in the Outfield, She’s Out of Control, A Brooklyn State of Mind and The Hollywood Knights. McClure received a Tony nomination for his performance in the titular role of Chaplin: The Musical; his additional Broadway credits include Avenue Q and I’m Not Rappaport. O’Malley most recently appeared on Broadway in the revival of Annie as Grace Farrell. She was also seen in Wicked, Sunday in the Park with George, Hairspray and Beauty and the Beast.
Honeymoon in Vegas tells the story of Jack Singer (McClure), a commitment-phobe who finally proposes to his girlfriend Betsy (O’Malley). The couple heads to Vegas to get hitched, but when the smooth talking gambler Tommy Korman (Danza) falls head over heels for Betsy, he arranges for Jack to lose big in a poker game so he can claim the bride-to-be as his own girlfriend.
Denis Jones will choreograph. Additional casting and creative team will be announced in the coming weeks.
