Broadway favorites Patrick Page (Casa Valentina), Michael Arden (The Times They Are A-Changin') and Ciara Renée (Pippin) will star in the stage musical adaptation of Disney’s 1996 animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame in San Diego. According to the U-T San Diego, the production will make its American premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse October 26 through December 7. As previously reported, the production will then head to the Paper Mill Play House. Next stop Broadway?
Page, who (in)famously played the Green Goblin in Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, takes on the role of the evil Frollo in Hunchback. Arden will play Quasimodo, with Renée as Esmeralda. Joining them will be Andrew Samonsky as Phoebus and Erik Liberman as Clopin.
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Peter Parnell and directed by Scott Schwartz, the musical is a darker take on Disney’s 1996 film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel about Quasimodo, a deformed bellringer at the Notre Dame catherdral, and his unlikely relationship with the gypsy Esmeralda.
