Has Benedict Cumberbatch Found His Ophelia?
Benedict Cumberbatch has his eye on a Broadway alum. The Sherlock star, who will headline the sold-out production of Hamlet at London’s Barbican next year, thinks that Jessica Chastain (The Heiress) could be his Ophelia. “She can come and join our party if she wants,” Cumberbatch told Yahoo! Movies, after Chastain expressed interest in playing the heroine. “She hasn’t aged out of our production. I’m an older Hamlet, and we can all be contemporaries in the young world of that play." More Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in the U.K.
Staying with London theater for a minute, Hadyn Gwynne, Jerome Pradon and Anna Skellern will join the previously announced Tamsin Greig in the U.K. premiere of David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane’s new musical adaptation of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Directed by Bartlett Sher, the limited engagement will begin previews on December 20 at the Playhouse Theatre. Opening night is set for January 12, 2015.
The Obies Switch It Up
Changes are afoot with The Obie Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievement off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway. The American Theatre Wing has entered into a partnership with the Village Voice to co-present the honor. Next year will mark the Award’s 60th anniversary and we look forward to seeing what they've got in store for the event in May 2015.
Zachary Quinto & Brian Cox Set for NBC's The Slap
NBC’s The Slap is tapping Broadway vets left, right and center! Zachary Quinto and Brian Cox will join the previously reported Mary-Louise Parker and Peter Sarsgaard in the mini-series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Slap follows a family in crisis after Quinto’s character slaps another couple’s misbehaving child.
Matt Doyle and More Team Up for The Lost Boy
Broadway’s Matt Doyle, Jennifer Cody, Sheffield Chastain, Chad Kimball, Mary Beth Peil, Elizabeth Morton and Oscar winner James Lecesne will appear in an industry reading of Ron Pallilo's The Lost Boy. Helmed by Tony Speciale, the play will be performed at the Manhattan Theatre Club Studios on September 15 and 16. We're keeping an eye on this one...
