And we were really looking forward to a bloody good time. The off-Broadway mounting of the American Psycho musical adaptation has been canceled. The Second Stage production, which was slated to begin in February 2015, has been pulled by commercial rights owners Act 4 Entertainment. The New York Times reports that the show's producers have recently been in discussion about taking the tuner directly to Broadway.
American Psycho features music and lyrics by Tony and Grammy winner Duncan Sheik and a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the musical follows 26-year-old Patrick Bateman: a sophisticated, rich and handsome Wall Street banker in 1980s New York City, who also happens to have a murderous, psychopathic alter ego that he hides from his friends and co-workers. The musical premiered at London’s Almeida Theatre in December 2013 with Rupert Goold as director. The novel was adopted into an acclaimed film in 2000 starring Christian Bale.
No official casting had been announced for the off-Broadway production, though it had been reported that Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson star Benjamin Walker would play Patrick Bateman. No word yet on what will replace American Psycho in the Second Stage season.
