It appears that some familiar Disney character names may have snuck their way into the forthcoming Disney film adaptation of Into the Woods.
According to the movie’s official website, Rapunzel’s Prince, played by Billy Magnussen, has been renamed Flynn Rider: the moniker of a similar character in the 2010 film Tangled. Additionally, Cinderella’s Prince (portrayed on screen by Chris Pine) has taken on the recognizable pseudonym Prince Charming, and Christine Baranski is not playing Cinderella’s Stepmother, but rather the name of the parallel character from the Disney animated film, Lady Tremaine.
Cinderella’s stepsisters, played by Tammy Blanchard and Lucy Punch, have kept the names of their Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine counterparts: Florinda and Lucinda, rather than their Disney names Anastasia and Drizella. And Meryl Streep is still The Witch, not Tangled's Mother Gothel. Sorry, Streep, Donna Murphy’s still holding onto that one.
The film, which will release on Christmas Day, also features Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, James Corden as The Baker, Emily Blunt as The Baker’s Wife, Johnny Depp as The Wolf, MacKenzie Mauzy as Rapunzel, Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood and Daniel Huttlestone as Jack.
The cast list featured on the Disney website has since been removed. Broadway.com has reached out to Disney for comment.
