Mazel tov, Fiddler on the Roof is celebrating its 50th anniversary! In honor of the momentous occasion, it gives us naches to celebrate the Tony-winning musical all week long on Broadway.com. But we’re not the only ones who adore Tevye, Golde and their lovely daughters—Mrs. Doubtfire, Peter Griffin, Fran the Nanny and even Lego dudes love Fiddler, too. Check out our favorite send-ups of Fiddler on the Roof in movies, TV and pop culture below, then check back all week for more features. And mark your calendars—Fiddler is aiming to return to Broadway in the 2015-16 season!
Family Guy
Would you pay to see William Shatner in a Providence Performing Arts Center production of Fiddler on the Roof? We totally would. Imagine the diction! The gesticulations! The hotel room discounts! (Fun fact: This Star Trek alum never played Tevye in real life, but Leonard Nimoy did.)
Mrs. Doubtfire
We always knew Mrs. Doubtfire looked great in a housedress, but who knew she could also predict the future? In this clip, the late Robin Williams sings a verse of “Matchmaker” from Fiddler on the Roof with Harvey Fierstein as his makeup artist brother. Fierstein later went on to play Tevye on Broadway in 2004!
The Nanny
Casting directors, take note: Fran Drescher is a fabulous Fruma Sarah. In this 1996 episode of The Nanny, Fran becomes a regular fixture on The Rosie O’Donnell Show after making a witty comment about raising kids in the audience. Then she has this dream...and the rest is pure gold.
Community
Did someone say rapping rabbis? When Professor Garrity decides to direct an all-black production of Fiddler on the Roof, cringe-worthy comedy ensues. Here, Donald Glover leads the showstopping number “It’s Hard to Be Jewish in Russia” from Fiddler, Please.
Full House
There’s nothing more embarrassing than having your family burst into tears when you leave for the first day of school. Oh, except when they cry and follow you around singing “Sunrise, Sunset.” Come on, Danny, Uncle Jesse and Joey. Get it together.
Fiddler: Lego Edition
And just like Vanessa Williams, we’re gonna go and save the best for last. Some stop-motion animation genius created this impressive all-Lego production of Fiddler on the Roof for your viewing pleasure. We may or may not have staged a similar production with our Barbies in second grade.
Check back all week long for more Fiddler features!
