Our Broadway instincts are on red alert with this news. Oscar nominee Sharon Stone (Casino), Stacy Keach (soon to be seen in Love Letters) and Jacob Young (All My Children) will lead a developmental reading of Ben Elton’s Popcorn. Directed by Mark Rozzano, the Telling Company’s workshop will take place at New York's Friars Club on October 6 .
Elton adapted Popcorn from his novel of the same name and the show won the 1998 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Popcorn follows the trail of two kids, who in reaction to the ongoing violence in films, go on their own cross-country killing spree. In California, they take their favorite film director hostage and claim his violent movies are the reason they became serial killers. The satirical black comedy poses the question: does the extreme violence in today’s movies motivate real-life acts of brutality?
The reading will also feature Broadway alums Jim Borstelmann, Bryn Dowling and Angie Schworer.
