Frozen is coming! Frozen is coming! While the Broadway adaptation of the Disney blockbuster can’t come soon enough for those of who us who aren't bothered by the cold, Mickey and his crew are hard at work bringing Arendelle to the stage. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Theatrical president Thomas Schumacher revealed, “I’m already talking to directors, and I have a design concept, and we have to begin to fashion this idea.”
Plans for a Broadway adaptation of the Oscar-winning animated film were originally confirmed in January. Schumacher recalls first seeing the film at a midnight screening before its release, after which he immediately texted Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer John Lasseter, saying, “When do we start?” Lasseter gave him a call immediately, thrilled by the idea.
But unless you’re Elsa, it takes a while to build an ice castle. “It doesn’t need to be fast. It needs to be great,” Schumacher said. While it’ll take some time for Anna, Elsa and the whole gang to hit the stage, Aladdin’s magic carpet is ready to go global. In addition to the previously announced Japan engagement, Schumacher revealed that four more international productions of the latest Disney musical are in the works. Lyricist Tim Rice hinted recently to Broadway.com that London could be one of Aladdin's destinations.
What other items are on the Mouse’s drawing board? “I have been talking with Marvel about theatrical opportunities, Schumacher says. He added, “There is a very interesting Lucas-oriented live event that could happen, but there’s no rush on that.” Wait, is the Star Wars musical that Broadway fans voted for actually happening?!
