Neil Patrick Harris is officially joining American Horror Story: Freak Show…but WAIT! There’s more! The Tony and Emmy winner is bringing along his hubby, the newly-announced Broadway-bound David Burtka. According to TVLine, Harris will have a two episode-arc at the end of the season as a chameleon salesman, and Burtka will have a steamy storyline opposite Jessica Lange’s Elsa Mars. We wonder what anachronistic number they’ll inevitably perform together?
Harris took home the 2014 Tony Award for his performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He hosted the Tonys in 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2009, winning Emmys for all four years. He also has an Emmy for his guest stint on Glee, and hosted the ceremony in 2009 and 2013. Next up: Hosting the Oscars. Burtka, who will return to Broadway this spring in It Shoulda Been You, made his Great White Way debut as Tulsa in the 2003 revival of Gypsy. Other stage credits include The Play About the Baby and The Opposite of Sex. His TV credits include The West Wing, Crossing Jordan and How I Met Your Mother.
Harris reportedly penned a letter to Murphy, expressing his interest in appearing on the FX series' fourth season. Murphy responded with an unofficial offer in the form of a tweet. According to Entertainment Weekly, Harris and Burtka were initially offered a role as the dysfunctional gay couple Chad and Patrick (in the end, the roles were played by Zachary Quinto and Teddy Sears). The two are just the latest in a string of Broadway vets to join the Ryan Murphy project. In addition to Lange, the list includes Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Patti LaBelle and Finn Wittrock.
