Disney has announced via Twitter that Tony winners Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth will be among the stars to provide vocals for the Lucasfilm feature Strange Magic. The animated film, directed by Gary Rydstrom, will be released in movie theaters on January 23, 2015. Joining Cumming and Chenoweth in the cast are Evan Rachel Wood, Maya Rudolph and Sam Palladio.
According to Variety, the film, with a story by George Lucas, is a fairy tale musical inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, told through popular songs of the past six decades. It follows a crew of goblins, elves, fairies and more through their battle of a powerful potion. Rumors of a sequel to the blockbuster Frozen surfaced last week after Disney registered domain names for the title Strange Magic, a term referenced in the original animated film.
Cumming can currently be seen in Cabaret, reprising his Tony-winning performance as the Emcee. His screen credits include The Good Wife, X-Men 2 and The Tempest. Chenoweth, whose Broadway credits include Wicked, The Apple Tree, Promises, Promises and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (for which she won a Tony Award,) returns to the Great White Way next year in On the Twentieth Century. She took home an Emmy Award in 2009 for her performance in Pushing Daisies.
