The Tony Awards Rules Committee will review the previously reported online petition calling for the reinstatement of the awards for Best Sound Design in a Play and Musical. The news follows the Administration Committee’s first meeting of the 2014-15 season, where eligibility rulings were determined for seven shows that have opened so far this season.
The decision to eliminate the two sound categories was announced after the final Tony Awards Administration Committee meeting of the 2013-14 season, which took place less than a week following the annual ceremony. The petition was recently submitted to the committee to reconsider; it contained over 32,000 signatures, including those of Stephen Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hugh Jackman.
It is not yet clear when exactly the rules committee will review the decision, though the administration committee did confirm that the two categories would not be reinstated for this season.
