Two more Prime Ministers have been announced for The Audience, starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. The Good Wife star Dylan Baker and two-time Tony winner Judith Ivey will play John Major and Margaret Thatcher, respectively, in Peter Morgan’s play. Directed by Stephen Daldry, the show will begin previews on February 17, 2015 and run through June 28. Opening night is set for March 8 at Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, not even to their spouses. The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister uses these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional—sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. In turn, the Queen can’t help but reveal her own self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases. These private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age, from the beginning of Elizabeth II’s reign to today.
Baker received a Tony nod for LaBête and has also appeared on Broadway in Mauritius, November and God of Carnage. He has earned three Emmy nominations for his work as Colin Sweeney on The Good Wife. His film credits include Happiness, Anchorman 2, Selma, Trainwreck, Franny, The Humbling, Secretariat, Revolutionary Road, Hide and Seek, Rick, Spiderman II & III, Road to Perdition and Changing Lanes.
Ivey won Tonys for her work in Hurlyburly and Steaming; she also garnered nods for The Heiress and Park Your Car in Harvard Yard. Ivey received an Emmy nomination for What the Deaf Man Heard. Other screen credits include Devil’s Advocate, Compromising Positions, Love, Hurts, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Flags of Our Fathers and What Alice Found.
The cast will also feature the previously announced Geoffrey Beevers, Michael Elwyn, Richard McCabe and Rufus Wright. The rest of the 18-member company will be announced later including three more Prime Ministers.
