Megan Mullally and Rupert Grint will depart It’s Only a Play on January 4, 2015, the date the show had initially been set to end its limited engagement. A production spokesperson had no word yet on who will be playing Julia Budder and Frank Finger when the Terrence McNally comedy extends, first at its current home, the Schoenfeld Theatre, through January 18, 2015, before it moves to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre from January 23.
As previously reported, Tony winner Martin Short will replace Nathan Lane as James Wicker in the production from January 7; Lane will also play his final performance on January 4. Broadway.com has confirmed that the other cast members, Matthew Broderick, F. Murray Abrahm, Stockard Channing and Micah Stock will remain with the show through March 29.
It's Only a Play, directed by Jack O’Brien, is set on the opening night of Broderick's character Peter Austin's new play as he anxiously awaits to see if his show is a hit. With his career on the line, he shares his big first night with his best friend, a television star (Lane), his fledgling producer (Mullally), his erratic leading lady (Channing), his wunderkind director (Grint), an infamous drama critic (Abraham), and a wide-eyed coat check attendant (Stock) on his first night in Manhattan.
