Into the Woods, The Normal Heart & More Broadway Faves Receive Golden Globe Nominations

The screen adaptations of Sondheim & Lapine’s Into the Woods and Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, along with a host of Broadway alums have been nominated for the 2015 Golden Globe Awards! The 72nd annual ceremony will be held on January 11, 2015.

Into the Woods is up for Best Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical. It will face off with the Broadway-set Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Pride and St. Vincent. Emily Blunt has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical for Into the Woods, as has Quvenzhané Wallis for Annie and The Audience’s Helen Mirren for The Hundred-Foot Journey. Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Into the Woods, bringing the total number of nominations for the tuner up to three. Also in the category are Broadway alum Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year, soon-to-be-seen on Broadway Keira Knightley for The Imitation Game and Cabaret’s Emma Stone for Birdman.

In other film categories, Constellations’ Jake Gyllenhaal picked up a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama for Nightcrawler, Tony winner Eddie Redmayne earned one for The Theory of Everything, Tony winner Ralph Fiennes was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical for The Grand Budapest Hotel and Broadway alum Ethan Hawke received a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Boyhood. Annie was recognized for Best Original Song—Motion Picture for Sia’s "Opportunity."

TV-wise there was a strong showing for Broadway. The Normal Heart was nominated for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for TV, with Mark Ruffalo picking up a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture Made for TV for his performance in the screen adaptation. The Real Thing’s Maggie Gyllenhaal has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for The Honorable Woman, as have Great White Way alums Jessica Lange for AHS and Frances McDormand for Olive Kitteridge.

Tony winner Viola Davis garnered a nod in the Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series—Drama for How to Get Away with Murder, as did Great White Way alum Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife and Constellations’ Ruth Wilson for The Affair. In the corresponding actor category, Tony winners Kevin Spacey and Liev Schreiber were nominated for House of Cards and Ray Donovan, respectively. For Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series—Comedy or Musical Broadway vet Edie Falco was nominated for Nurse Jackie and A Month in the Country’s Taylor Schilling for Orange Is The New Black. Great White Way alum William H. Macy was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series—Comedy or Musical for Shameless, as was Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent.

Meanwhile, there were nods for Broadway faves Uzo Aduba for Orange Is The New Black, Kathy Bates for AHS and Allison Janney for Mom in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV category. Matt Bomer will face off for The Normal Heart with Cabaret’s Tony winner Alan Cumming in the corresponding male category.
