Andrew Lloyd Webber Says Cats Will Return to Broadway, May Star Nicole Scherzinger

Looks like the memory will live again on Broadway! Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed to The Guardian that his Tony-winning musical Cats will return to the Great White Way and that he “greatly hopes” Nicole Scherzinger will star in the show. The former Pussy Cat Doll is currently appearing as Grizabella in the recently extended revival in London’s West End. No word yet on dates or theater, but the production will not be able to play at its former Main Stem home, the Winter Garden Theatre—Lloyd Webber's School of Rock will begin performances there on November 2.

Broadway.com attended the London production’s opening night in December and spoke with Lloyd Webber; check out the video below where the legendary composer told us he believes Scherzinger is "one in a million." His latest leading lady has sold 50 million records with the Pussy Cat Dolls and 16 million records as a solo artist. Scherzinger recently served as a judge on the U.K. X Factor and won the U.S. Dancing With the Stars in 2010. Stage credits include Maureen in Rent at the Hollywood Bowl, directed by Neil Patrick Harris. Screen acting credits include How I Met Your Mother, Men in Black 3, Half & Half, My Wife and Kids and Love Don’t Cost a Thing.

Cats, featuring a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by T.S. Eliot, Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe, ran for 21 years in London and 18 years on Broadway. It won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the tuner tells the story of the Jellicle cats and each cat's individual quest to be selected as the lucky one who will ascend to "the Heaviside Layer."
